How should you prepare your business for a natural disaster

With natural disasters recently occurring around Australia, 1300 Web Pro had a think about our digital disaster plan. Do you know what you would do if a natural disaster happened in your area and your business was temporarily closed, or worse, your technology stopped working? In this week's webchat, Tristan and Ella talk about the importance of having a natural disaster plan in place to protect your digital items when nature strikes.

To ensure your business is prepared for an emergency, we recommend the following:

Make sure your digital backups are updated regularly

Compile a list of companies that you deal with (IT provider, Eftpos provider & email provider etc.) and make sure their contact details accessible in case you need to access them in an emergency.

Make sure you have an organisation chart mapped out. This will make delegating work easier. Having a well thought-out procedure is important so people know who to contact about what in an emergency.

Where should you store this information when preparing for a disaster?

It is important to develop a data backup strategy. Identify what data is the most important to backup, then plan regularly scheduled backups from wireless devices, laptop computers and desktop computers to a network server. Also, have a written plan with multiple copies. Store them in a different place such as in the office, at home and with a trusted 3rd party.

What else should I do to prepare?

Do you know what programs are running on computers? You should have a plan if something was to happen to your computers. We suggest storing licensing numbers and login details in an online password manager in case you need to access programs outside of your office.

An EMS system can be very effective in notifying your customer base if you are close, re-location or still open.
